California Events to Know This November

A dermatology lecture, a community skin cancer screening, and a walk alongside cancer survivors may look like very different experiences. Each offers a way to connect knowledge with care – and to meet people working toward healthier communities.

This November, California offers opportunities to explore dermatology through professional education, public screening, and community fundraising. Whether you are a student considering a career in medicine, a healthcare professional, or a community member looking for a meaningful way to participate, these events provide several places to start.

November 4: Learn From Patient Cases at UCSF

San Francisco | 8-10 a.m. Pacific

UCSF Dermatology Grand Rounds will feature grand rounds and patient cases with Jeffrey P. North, MD, a professor in the departments of dermatology and pathology. The in-person program takes place at Herbst Hall, 1600 Divisadero Street, second floor.

For students interested in dermatology or dermatopathology, case discussions can offer a valuable glimpse into how clinicians connect a patient’s presentation with diagnostic reasoning. The event lists students among its audiences; visiting students should contact the organizer to confirm attendance arrangements.

November 5-8: Explore Dermatologic Surgery in San Diego

San Diego | Marriott Marquis San Diego

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Annual Meeting brings together dermatologists for expert-led education, hands-on learning, and professional networking.

For those exploring a future in dermatologic surgery, this meeting offers an opportunity to learn more about the field and the questions driving clinical practice. Students interested in skin cancer care or Mohs surgery can review the program for sessions relevant to their goals.

Because this is a professional meeting, prospective attendees should confirm registration categories, costs, and eligibility before making travel plans. An MHS student should ask which registration category applies.

San Diego | Coasterra | 7-10 p.m. Pacific

The Association of Academic Cosmetic Dermatology Annual Meeting focuses on academic cosmetic and laser dermatology, resident education, and developments in the field. Its listed program includes networking and a chemical-peel training session for registered medical students, residents, and fellows.

For students, an academic setting can help place procedures within a broader discussion of patient evaluation, technique, and follow-up care. However, registration currently shows closed. Anyone interested should contact AACD about availability and eligibility rather than assume walk-in access.

Turn Attendance Into Community Action

Choose an event that connects with something you want to learn or contribute. Attend a lecture with a question in mind. Share a verified screening announcement with someone who might benefit. Gather friends for Walk for Hope, or ask about a volunteer role that matches your experience.

At Beyond Skin Barriers, we see community participation as a starting point for stronger connections between education, advocacy, and care. This November offers opportunities to make those connections – one conversation, one shared resource, and one step at a time.
