A career in dermatology may begin with curiosity about skin health, a passion for serving communities, or a desire to understand conditions that affect how people feel and live. But turning that interest into a career can raise plenty of questions: How do you prepare for medical school? Where do you find mentors? What does becoming a dermatologist involve?
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Pathways Dermatology Career Prep program gives aspiring physicians an opportunity to explore those questions through practical learning and connection.
Taking place June 7–11, 2027, in Skokie, Illinois, the five-day program brings students together with dermatologists, residents, medical students, admissions leaders, and industry professionals. It is designed for college, pre-med, and postbaccalaureate students interested in pursuing dermatology. Applicants should review the application materials for specific eligibility requirements.
Explore the Possibilities
Dermatology connects scientific knowledge with patient care, procedures, and the many ways skin conditions affect daily life. Exploring the specialty early can help students understand what interests them, and which steps they need to take next.
Through AAD Pathways, participants can engage in hands-on workshops, develop professional skills, receive medical school preparation guidance, and build relationships with mentors and peers. The program also includes medical school visits and opportunities to hear directly from people at different stages of their training.
These experiences offer more than a glimpse of a specialty. They create space to ask questions, practice introducing yourself professionally, and learn from others’ experiences.
Why Mentorship Matters
For someone exploring medicine, the path ahead can feel unfamiliar. A conversation with a medical student can make the application process easier to understand. A resident may offer perspective on training, while a practicing dermatologist can share how their interests shaped their career.
Mentorship gives students a chance to move from “I’m interested” to “Here is how I can begin.” Connecting with peers can also provide encouragement and a reminder that no one has to navigate every step alone.
